Procession of the Holy Blood

Two sisters from the community walked in the annual Procession of the Holy Blood which is held every year on Ascension Day in Bruges. They walked behind the relic after the clergy at the invitation of the Administrator of the diocese. The  Procession depicts the principal events of the Bible and the History of the Relic interspersed with folklore and a considerable number of bands and groups of dancers – all in really beautiful costumes. The procession is very long and there are around 700 participants, as well as many animals – principally horses, but also two flocks of sheep, camels and  donkeys. It is a tiring experience but so very worthwhile as we were witnessing to our faith and  religious commitment in front of a large crowd of 50,000 to 60,000 people.
